Colts owner Jim Irsay compared the risk of football to bobsledding and taking an aspirin. I'm not even joking, via Sports Business Daily:
“Look at it: When you get into Olympic bobsledding — I could sit down and name a dozen different sports — it has always been a known factor that you know you are going in there and you are taking a risk.”That might be true there are risks in life, but I think there are probably more complex long term issues with repeatedly slamming one's body into someone elses for hours at a time.
“I believe this: that the game has always been a risk, you know, and the way certain people are. Look at it. You take an aspirin, I take an aspirin, it might give you extreme side effects of illness and your body … may reject it, where I would be fine. So there is so much we don’t know.”
To compare football to taking an aspirin is absolutely one of the most insane things you'll hear anyone say about it. Don't get me wrong these kinds of statements are entertaining as hell, but they make NFL owners look really bad.
My suggestion is to hire a dude to speak on behalf of the team to make these kind of comments. The entertainment value remains but you don't take the hit as the owner.
