Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo announced his retirement from the NFL with an Instagram post. Mayo is only 29 years old and apparently doesn't want to suffer from the long-term health issues associated with playing football.
A lot of people are going to question Mayo's decision to retire, but I'm not. It's his decision to make, it's his body and mind that will suffer the affects of playing football.
It's a very physically demanding sport with serious long-term health concerns. Retirement before 30 could become an increasingly more common practice.
Should the NFL be concerned? In the short-term? No, but with less kids playing and now the increase in under 30 retirement from NFL starting talent, the long-term answer is yes.
